Lorraine Watry is an award-winning watercolor artist. She is a signature member and the current president of the National Watercolor Society, and a signature member of Transparent Watercolor Society of America and American Women Artists among others. Lorraine’s watercolor paintings of wildlife, landscapes, glass, and metal, depict quiet moments full of light and color. Lorraine’s preferred medium is watercolor and she enjoys the challenge of creating realistic subjects with water and color. While she  paints a variety of subjects, a theme of reflective, shiny objects runs throughout her watercolors. She is fascinated in capturing reflective objects like water, birds’ feathers, glass and metal. She is drawn to the unusual, abstract shapes that are often found in realistic subjects. These abstract shapes are a nice counterpoint to a bird, band instrument, or waterlily.

    WORKSHOP FORMAT

In this workshop, we will be looking at two studies. One study will capture an amazing hummingbird and challenge us to capture the shiny, transparent and fast, moving wings. The second study will look at metal reflections. Reflections can be fascinating...metal, glass, and even water can reflect an almost perfect image or it may be distorted due to surface profiles or movement. This workshop is designed for intermediate and above watercolorists.

After working with watercolor for over 30 years,  Lorraine believes watercolor students learn best when they can see a demonstration, therefore, she demonstrates often. Lorraine teaches her students the important fundamentals of the watercolor including composition, color mixing, and perspective to achieve a finished work of art.

Lorraine will supply the students with photos of the hummingbird and metal studies.  Students will need to come to the workshop with the drawing on watercolor paper already masked and ready to paint. She will send detailed information for the preparation steps.

She will demo the different parts of the painting (2 or 3 times each day) and give students lots of time to paint and ask questions.  Lorraine will share her method of painting reflections, as well as how to create a realistic likeness of the subject of that reflection. The fundamentals of watercolor, color theory, and the application of design principles will be discussed and demonstrated, so that each student will have the tools to complete their own successful painting. She will bring relevant handouts and include lots of tips and techniques throughout the workshop.
