    "High Impact Compositions in Watercolor"

Description: The Guest Instructor, Tina Stallard, NMWS is an award-winning artist trained in Graphic Design at the Univ. of Calif. Berkeley Extension. This workshop will focus on understanding the powerful compositional techniques for designing successful paintings.

Working from photos (personal or provided), participants will learn to identify and distill the essentials of composition. Then, students will practice developing balanced perspectives and value studies for stronger foundations. This process will minimize clutter, while strengthening and refining the painting center of interest. Participants will also develop color palettes; exploring warm vs. cool colors and the roles they play. Starting with the backgrounds using a "wet into wet" technique, artists will block in the shapes and values from their value study to produce soft edges and atmospheric effects that unify and harmonize the background and focal point. As time allows there will also be discussions/demos of effective "tips and tricks", along with one-on-one time (does not include pouring techniques)

    Limited to 14 students

Juror: Janet Rogers, AWS, TWSA, FWS-D

Judge: Karen Conley, President of ArtForms Artists Association of New Mexico

    Theme:  "Transitions & Transformations"

New Mexico Watercolor Society–Southern Chapter invites members of both NMWS chapters to submit artwork for selection to the 2025 Fall/Winter Exhibition. The theme of the exhibition is “Transitions & Transformations”. In these tumultuous times we are surrounded by changes that often bring about transitions and sometimes dramatic transformations to ourselves and our communities, environment, cities and countryside, as well as to our social and political lives. Artists throughout the ages have used their art to depict—and inspire us to see and feel—these dramatic changes. As an NMWS artist, you are encouraged to boldly interpret a variety of the transitional and transformational subject matters that have affected you deeply.

All information about the juried exhibit and entry will be available through ArtCall. The commission fee for all art sold during the exhibition will be 20%.

This year we also have a checklist which you can use to make sure you've fulfilled the elements of entering.  Download and print the Entry checklist 2025.pdf.
